The Muckin' o' Geordie's Byre
The following are the lyrics from a version of a lively Scottish song, usually sung at fast tempo - anyone care to offer a translation?
Noo when I want taw lauchin' I think on the scene
When a'body roub' aboot cam; ower tae clean,
And clairted themsel's richt up taw the e'en
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Wi Robbie the Rochie and Willie the Doo,
The auld wife hersel' an' Teeny McCrew;
And a'body else the left aff the pleugh
For the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Oh! Siccan a sotter was a'body in,
Five mile awa' ye could hear the din;
Even the vera coo had to grin
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Noo the bobby cam' roun' tae quell doon the soun'
The cratur got lost whaur the rucks hae their foun'
He feel in the midden and was like taw droon
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
The weicht o' him syne sent the barrow in bits,
The wheel cairred on and the auld wife it hits;
Losh! ye should hae seen how she did the splits
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Oh! Siccan a sotter was a'body in,
Five mile awa' ye could hear the din;
Even the vera coo had to grin
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Oh the whisky gaed roun' Tammy flein' the doo'
And aye as they drank, the mair they got fou'
The only anes sober, the calf an' the coo
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Tammy roared oot "Ring the bell noo for mair"
Syne tuggit the coo's tail, and pu'd oot a hair;
When she kickit oot he gaed up in the air
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.
Oh! Siccan a sotter was a'body in,
Five mile awa' ye could hear the din;
Even the vera coo had to grin
At the muckin' o' Geordie's byre.

Now when I want to laugh,I think on the scene when everyone around came over to clean & dirtied themselves right up to the eyes at the cleansing of George's cowshed...(much better in Scots !)
Brian,
I would love to see the entire song "translated", if you would be so kind? I'm a first generation American, and some of the words I can figure for myself. As a children, we would listen to Andy Stuart sing many songs, but we never had the printed lyrics, and my parents (how I miss them!) either couldn't or wouldn't translate for us. I would love to see the entire song. What I can understand is absolutely hilarious.
Many thanks!
now when i want a laugh i remember the scenewhen everyone from around about came over to clea, and dirtied themselvelves right up to the eyes,at the mucking (cleansing) of Geoerge,s cowshed
robbie ect are names)wullit the doo (pigeon), the old wife herself and tiny McGrew,and everyone else that was lt off the plough,for the mucking etc
oh such a bother was everyboby in, 5 miles away you could hear the din, even the very cow had to grin etc
when the boby(policeman) came aroundto quell down the noise, the poor soulgot lost where the byre foundations could not be found, he fell into the dung midded (heap) and nealy drowned, at the etc- the weight of him soon had the barrow in ipieces, the wheel carried on and hit the farmers wife, wow you should have seen how she did the splits at the etc
o the whisky went round and tom fleeing the pigeon and always as the drank the more they got full(drunk),the only ones sober were the calf and the cow,at the etc,--- Tommy yelled out ring the bell now for more,soon soon tugged at the cows tail and pulled out a hair, when she kicked out he went up in the air, at the etc
Oh such a stramash was there to see,
Five miles away you could hear the melee
Even the domesticated animals were consumed with glee,
At he cleansing of George's cowshed.
The only part Andy Stewart sings in English.
